ADAPSO Reunion Transcript, May 3 & 4, 2002:
The Origins of the Multi-Billion Dollar Computer Software and Services
Industry
A Software History Center Project
Luanne Johnson, Editor
The May 2002 ADAPSO
Reunion was a rare gathering of nearly 100 of the people who pioneered
the computer software and services industry. Together, they spent two
days creating an oral history of what they had done 40 years earlier to
start, build and succeed in an industry that had no precedent, no
guidelines, no proven metrics.
Some were able to become
millionaire leaders in this new industry. Others went bankrupt trying
and then, invariably, tried again.
ADAPSO was the industry
trade association whose meetings were a focal point for those nascent
software and services businesses, a place to meet, share best practices
information, and set industry standards. Most participants were more
entrepreneurial technician than business executive, more risk taker than
administrator, all to the decided benefit of the companies who
ultimately bought the software products and services.
The ADAPSO Reunion
Transcript is, arguably, the most accurate record of how the software
industry developed, told by the people who were there making it happen.
It is a must read for anyone interested in the business of information
technology because the business practices of today are all based on what
these people did then, in the late 1960s,1970s and early 1980s.
The Transcript is
available for $10.00 plus shipping. Shipping costs are $3.50 US and
$6.00 International.
